Frequently Asked Questions
Q Is there enough sunshine in the UK to make solar energy viable?
A Compared to the equator, the UK receives approximately 55% of the energy received there, ample to operate an efficient solar water heating system, even in the North of Scotland.
Q How much conventional energy will I save?
A 55% to 70% of the energy required to heat your hot water.
Q What size of system do I need?
A When using an efficient solar collector you need 1 square metre per 60 litre hot water cylinder capacity.
Q Where do I position my panel?
A Facing as much due south as possible plus or minus 35°. For other situations call AES to discuss.
Q What angle should the panel be at?
A Between 20° and 50° to horizontal.
Q Should I have a single/twin coil or preheat cylinder?
A A preheat, two cylinder system is slightly more efficient. A single cylinder/twin coil system is simpler to install and cheaper in new built or refurbishment situation.
Q How do I size my cylinder?
A 40 to 60 litres per household occupant.
Q Where should the solar cylinder be positioned?
A In the case of a single cylinder/twin coil cylinder, as close to the solar collector as possible. For preheat, as close to the existing cylinder as possible.
Q Can my cylinder be placed above the panel?
A Yes, as long as the mains hot water supply is not affected.
Q What temperatures can I expect from my solar system?
A On sunny days temperatures of 70°C to 85°C are common.
Q Do I get hot water during the winter months?
A Even during cloudy days in winter you can expect some gain. On sunny days, 10 to 15 days per winter month, you can get water above 45°C to 50°C.
Q What temperature do I need for a bath?
A A hot bath is 40°C to 45°C.
Q What temperature do I need for washing dishes?
A 45°C to 50°C
Q Once I have bought all the equipment, how do I get my system installed?
A 1. If you have a sound knowledge of plumbing you can do it yourself. It will take you approximately 2 to 3 days. AES will be available to “talk you through” any difficulties you might encounter.
2. You can employ an accredited installer to do the work for you. The cost for this depends on the complexity of your house. AES are happy to organise this on your behalf if you complete our property survey form.
3. Your local plumber or heating engineer may well be interested in doing the work for you at an hourly rate. AES will assist him by phone if he has any queries.
Important Note: Solar is very simple; there is absolutely no magic. Simple plumbing principles are applied.
