We now specialise in the installation of high-quality ground and air source heat pumps thanks to our team of renewable heating experts at our Dingwall Office! Heat pumps can be fitted alongside underfloor heating, radiators, solar panels, and whole-house ventilation systems. We accurately assess the needs of your project and offer a combination of renewable energy products that are right for your home or business, and right for you.
We have experience working in properties from Orkney to Dumfries, Islay to Aberdeen. We understand which products will (and just as importantly, won’t) work in your area and property. Our renewable heating systems have been installed in everything from new builds and country cottages to castles, warehouses and a marina – the only limit is your imagination!
If you’re looking for a no-nonsense approach to renewable heating, we’d be delighted to hear from you.
Ground Source Heat Pumps
What is a Ground Source Heat Pump?
Ground Source Heat Pumps (GSHP) work by extracting heat from the ground and using it to provide energy for heating and hot water in your home. They are very efficient and can convert one unit of energy into as much as five units of heat.
The heat pump circulates a mixture of water and antifreeze through pipes buried underground, where it absorbs heat. This heat is then transferred to a heat exchanger in the pump, warming radiators, underfloor heating, and household water.
Installation involves a ground loop, typically buried in horizontal trenches or a vertical borehole if space is limited. The system delivers consistent, lower-temperature heat over longer periods, creating a comfortable and safe indoor climate.
GSHP Benefits
1. Cost Savings
Ground source heat pumps are highly energy-efficient systems that harness renewable heat from the earth to provide all your heating and hot water needs. Over time, this translates into lower fuel bills, making them an economically sound choice for homeowners looking to cut energy costs.
2. Sustainable
GSHPs use a renewable source of heat to provide all your heating and hot water needs, reducing your reliance on fossil fuels and allowing you to tap into a sustainable energy supply. This not only helps to lower your home’s carbon footprint but also contributes to an eco-friendlier heating solution.
3. Minimal Maintenance
Ground source heat pumps are designed for durability and require minimal maintenance. With fewer moving parts compared to traditional heating systems, these pumps have a longer lifespan with minimal intervention. An annual service is recommended to ensure the system operates at its peak.
4. No Fuel Deliveries Needed
Unlike oil or LPG heating systems that require regular fuel deliveries and storage, ground source heat pumps do not rely on any external fuel supply. This eliminates the hassle of planning and waiting for fuel deliveries, offering a more convenient and self-sufficient heating solution.
Air Source Heat Pumps
What is an Air Source Heat Pump?
Air source heat pumps (ASHP) extract heat from the outside air and use it to provide heating and hot water for your home or business. Even in the coldest of winters, modern systems can convert one unit of energy into three units of heat. This can be significantly more in warmer weather.
ASHPs work by drawing in outside air and passing it through a heat exchanger, where the heat is absorbed by a refrigerant. This energy is then used to provide heating and hot water, with the process repeating continuously, making it a renewable source of energy.
An ASHP consists of two main parts: the outdoor unit with a fan and heat exchanger, and the indoor hot water cylinder and controller. The units are quiet and more energy-efficient than traditional gas or oil boilers, delivering a consistent, lower-temperature heat over a longer period for a comfortable indoor environment.
ASHP Benefits
1. Energy Efficiency
Air source heat pumps are highly efficient systems that extract heat from the outside air, even in colder temperatures, to provide all your heating and hot water needs. The efficiency of an air source heat pump can lower your energy bills, making it an affordable option for reducing heating costs.
2. No Emissions
Heat pumps are powered by electricity, including renewable sources like solar power and produce no direct emissions. This makes them a far more environmentally friendly option than fossil fuel-based heating systems, reducing the overall carbon footprint of your home.
3. Efficient Regardless of Temperature
Air source heat pumps remain highly efficient even in cold temperatures. They use a small amount of electricity – typically 2-3kW when running – and multiply that into 3-4x of heat energy, sourced from the natural environment, ensuring consistent performance year-round.
4. User Friendly
Heat pumps are designed for ease of use, offering both simple control and minimal maintenance. They can be used as part of a climate-controlled system and integrate easily with smart home accessories. The only ongoing responsibility is to schedule the annual service, to enjoy your system with minimal effort.
Case Study
Mr & Mrs Levene
The Levenes first discovered our services at a Renewable Energy event in Inverness, and we were delighted to install an Air Source Heat Pump at their home in September 2020. After a year, we checked in to see how the system was performing!
Despite installation being delayed due to lockdown restrictions, we ensured the Levenes were kept informed throughout. From the removal of their oil boiler to the installation of a fully insulated ‘lean-to’ for the hot water cylinder, the project was completed efficiently and with care for their property.
