Scotland is revelling in the fact that homeowners with solar panels can produce more energy than they need and sell excess back to the grid.

During the month of May those who have installed solar PV, generated more than 100% of their electricity needs in Aberdeen, Dumfries, Dundee, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness and Lerwick.

It’s a phenomenal time for our customers and proof that Scotland is not slacking when it comes to sunshine. Lerwick, the most northerly town in the UK was the sunniest place in the country in May generating 114% of the average daily household energy requirement.

In a BBC article Dr Sam Gardner, acting director of WWF Scotland, said: “Thanks to a super sunny month, solar was on sizzling form and could have met more than 100% of household electricity demand in towns and cities across Scotland. There was also enough sunshine to generate more than 90% of an average household’s hot water needs with solar hot water panels in the same cities.”

In April, Scottish Renewables published a report that said the “Impact of Scotland’s renewable energy sector can be felt across the whole country.”

It should no longer be a surprise that solar PV can produce 113% of the average household’s electricity usage and solar thermal 90% of hot water demand.
